This week end I have been repairing several HP41 units. Most required redoing the screw posts - either the upper or the lower posts.
Our pieces are glued to the calculator, and additionally they produce grip when the screws enter the post up to the end. Gluing is quite involved and dangerous - a drop within one o the keyboard keys' holes and you lose that key! It also takes a lot of time and it requires usually to glue today, allow it to cure overnight and finish it the following day.
Today I have tried NOT gluing the part, relying only on the grip. The key is 1) drilling deep and wide enough so that the grip can work, and 2) screw down the screws pushing hard down, to make sure that it does not move from the bottom.
I have tried it with 3 different units with success. It is key to drill well enough to make sure the part is flush with the keyboard circuit surface.
Too early to modify the book, but worth trying - since it does not cost anything!!
