Scientific Calculator Reissue

We are sorry to come back to you again - it is not our intention to fill your in-tray with daily messages - this is what the blog is for. However, so many of you have asked us details about the release of new calculators that we think it will be of interest for 90% of you.

New products: Calendar

Financial 30th Anniversary: it is intended for mid september, to make it coincide with the 30th anniversary of a well known HP product. I appreciate the IC of HP customers and refrain for giving more details.

Scientific Reissue.

It seems that many webshops that showed information and order pages have cancelled or hid the pages. My information is as follows:

HP will release 2 versions of this reissue: ABA, for the United States, and B1S, for EAME. Each one will have guarantee in its region, to avoid "grey imports". For the rest, there will be no difference. Both will be in English.

The European launch being a later decision, the units for EAME will apparently come on top of the original 10.000 production run (but will just be a fraction of it)

The release dates will be different as well: beginning of october for the american model, beginning of november for the european model. If you absolutely want to be the earliest adopter, I won't be able to help! (we'll only carry the European version)

This means that distributor pricing might be different per regions - and hence final price.

A final comment regarding prices and taxes. We are obliged to charge 18% VAT on all shipments to UN member states - unless we bill to a UN intrastat VAT registered company. If you compare it with a price without VAT, please take into account that your Customs should charge you your local VAT + duties, based on the declared value of the goods. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't (during my stay in Switzerland, they always did). You should take into consideration this fact when comparing prices.

Some Technical Details

According to the information that I have, the firmware will be exactly equal to the original model, i.e. limited to 65 registers. HP thinks it's better to avoid glitches and problems using a proven solution. However, according to a source linked to emulator design, it will not be too difficult to move it up to 128 registers. More than that will be substantially more complex. But that will be our community's task (the reissue will come with the same adaptor found in the HP30b)

If you plan to go that way, it would be good to buy 2 calculators: the one to experiment with, and the one that stays "factory" (you will not be able to keep the original firmware once flashed)

Just imagine what can be done with 128 registers! Or imagine if you can have 2 memory spaces- just like what's been done with the wp34s: you could keep 2 sets of programs according to your needs; or have one set with your programs (close to full memory used up), and one set empty, for heavy matrix utilisation.
